What We Do

© 2008 The Lions Club of Kenmore.  All Rights Reserved.

Since inception, The Lions Club of Kenmore has made significant contributions to organizations and agencies that provide services and adaptive equipment for those with sight and hearing impairments.  Tape recorders for the blind; a movie projector for a youth organization, a respirator purchased for a polio victim; and a Braillewriter for a sightless person are among the items our club has supplied.

The period during World War II saw contributions to the Red Cross “for special war work” and to the United War Fund; co-sponsorship of a community Flag Week; entertainment for draftees and for Veterans of Foreign Wars; assistance with Civilian Defense; and sending newspapers to local boys in the service.

For many years the Lions Club of Kenmore provided eye exams and glasses for clients of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center on Military Road.  By 1986 the club was unable to fund all requests and an appeal was mad to the District 20-N Lions for help and the Salvation Army Fund was created to share the financial burden.

Braille books, special typewriters and more recently radio receivers tuned to our local Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service are provided to keep the blind members of our community up to date with local and world events.  Our loan closet has provided wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes and an occasional hospital bed for those in need.

In 1957, the club provided a new school bus for the Parents Council for Retarded Children at a cost of $12,000.  When Kenmore Mercy Hospital opened in 1951, the Lions were one of the groups whose donations helped equip the hospital.  In 1991 the club committed $10,000 to fund the expanded hospital’s Optical Surgery prep room.  Additionally, individual members contributed $12,000, the most of any District 20-N Lions Club, to Campaign SightFirst, Lions Clubs International’s initiative to eliminate preventable blindness on a global scale.

In 1966, the Lions were one of the active sponsors of the U.S. Amateur Synchronized Swimming meet at the new Delaware Pool.  Donations to the James V. Ryan Paramedic Foundation, Lions Quest self-esteem education for grammar school students and sponsorship of a Youth Police Academy through the Kenmore Police Department are other ways that our club has benefited the community.  Another key component of community support is for youth engaged in athletic programs, most notably the club in recent years has sponsored baseball, hockey and basketball teams.

In 1986 the Lions Club of Kenmore established a Memorial Fund to invest bequests, memorial and honorarium donations to fund scholarships.  Currently the club awards one new four-year scholarship annually in the amount of $1,200.

Helping the local community is the most important function of the Lions Club of Kenmore.  If you are someone you know recognizes a financial need, please let us know.  We Serve our community!
