Lions Club of Kenmore

About Us

Since the inception of Lions Clubs International in 1917, individual Lions Clubs have grown to meet the specific need within their communities.  On May 8, 1929 the Lions Club of Kenmore, sponsored by the Buffalo Host Lions Club, joined this great organization with 32 Charter Members to serve the residents of Kenmore and the Town of Tonawanda.  This legacy of serving was enhanced when, in November of 1952, the Lions Club of Kenmore sponsored the Sheridan Drive Lions Club.  The Kenmore Lions Club has sponsored four district governors during its existence; Louis Bleyle, 1939; Roger Haase, 1995; Al Anderson, 2000 and Tom Reinagel, 2003.

In 1946 several Kenmore Lions members were instrumental in founding the Buffalo Eye Bank, the first organization of its kind in the United States.  By 1950 the Club became a charter member of the Lions Blind & Charity Fund. Initially this fund supported the Buffalo Eye Bank and now supports Upstate New York Transplant Services Eye Bank Division.

In 1991, the Lions Club of Kenmore and the Fort Erie Lions Club were joined in a formal “Twinning Ceremony.”  Many Friendships have been formed and ideas generated as the members of take turns visiting each other’s meetings.  This year also saw the start of area schools participating in the Lions Clubs International “Peace Poster Contest.”  Each year students draw pictures expressing their thoughts about peace.  We have been fortunate to have several entries go on to higher competition.  We have also increased our membership through this project.

In 1994 Kathy Cherico became the first female Kenmore Lions member and subsequently became the club’s first female president.  12 years later nearly 30% of the Kenmore Lions members are female.  Today the Lions Club of Kenmore is comprised of over 50 members who donate their time to serve their community.
